Understanding Motor Oil Labels

Motor oil labels have important information about the protection the oil provides. Motor oil labels use a three-symbol system consisting of two numbers around the letter W. The first number is the cold engine flow rating. The number after the W is the hot engine flow rate. The typical 10 W 30 motor oil represents a thin oil at number 10 and a thicker oil at number 30. The blend protects the engine in hot or cold conditions.

Waco-area drivers know that in cold conditions the oil must flow at the turn of the ignition. In warm conditions, the engine needs thick oil that resists becoming too thin to coat the parts. Most vehicles need an oil blend.
